Top 10 Benefits of Journaling

In my previous article I spoke of how journaling helped to transform my life. Expanding on this, I thought it would be valuable to highlight the many benefits of journaling. So, after much deliberation I have listed my top 10 benefits below.

1. Profound Health Benefits

There is nothing quite like creating the time and space to get the thoughts running through you mind out of your head and onto paper. That simple process of writing about your thoughts, feelings and experiences can throw up some incredibly valuable insights and gives you the time and space to explore them. You are using both sides of your brain to think critically and rationally, as well as accessing your feelings and intuition, often with great results. There are some major health benefits in releasing negative energy and emotions through writing down your thoughts and feelings. Studies have shown that journaling can help to lower anxiety, stress and help you to sleep better.

2. Increases Focus and Clarity

When we attach ourselves to lots of thoughts it can become overwhelming, stressful and confusing. I’m sure it’s not just me who has gone through times when I’ve lacked clarity and connection, unsure of what I want or how to achieve it. As already mentioned, don’t worry, we are all human. Bearing in mind we have tens of thousands of thoughts every day, it is not surprising we all feel like this from time to time. By writing down your thoughts and feelings you will be able to connect with yourself and unlock the answers that are inevitably within you.

3. Better Self-Awareness

It’s not often that we take the time out to consider our thoughts and feelings and then make a choice as to how we ‘manage’ them. Nor do we regularly contemplate our ‘core self’ – our values, virtues, strengths, purpose and vision for the future. However, when we have that deeper understanding it allows us to be much more connected with ourselves, what makes us happy and fulfilled and most importantly how we will achieve that. It helps us to be happy in the now whilst having a much clearer direction for our lives in terms of our vision for the future and the road map for getting there.

4. Improves Problem Solving and Decision-Making 

When it comes to problem solving and decision-making, often there is an assumption that those who are more ‘left brained’ are better problem solvers as the left brain is more analytic and rational. However, often we need the right brain’s creativity and connection with feelings, emotions and intuition to find the answers. Writing allows you to access and utilise both sides of your brain more effectively which often throws up solutions that you may not otherwise have considered.

5. Enhances Creativity

At times when journaling it can feel like you are releasing a stream of consciousness, writing without seriously thinking and just letting it flow. This can bring out thoughts and ideas that you may never otherwise have considered and can lead to you being much more expressive. Try it, I’m sure you’ll be amazed at how creative you can actually be!

 6. Holistically Improves Your Life

We all have so many different areas of our life – relationships, friends and family, career, finances, leisure time, personal environment etc. Should you wish to, journaling allows you to focus on whatever area(s) of your life are most important at that moment in time.

7. Captures Your Journey

There is no doubt that life is an amazing journey and we all have our ups and downs. However, by using journaling to help you make positive changes in your life you will have that amazing journey captured. You can look back at the progress you have made and celebrate successes along the way. That, in turn, can have an incredibly positive impact on your confidence and self-esteem.

8. Creates Flow

There are no hard and fast rules around how and when you should journal. Whilst we have our own recommendations, the reality is that it should be about what works best for you. Journaling is flexible in that it benefits both right and left brained people. It doesn’t take a lot of time out of your day to take stock and listen to yourself and journaling also creates its own energy and motivation when you are in flow.

9. Achieving Goals

Journaling often includes writing about our goals, ambitions and dreams. By writing about them it helps to create the blueprint for how you will go about achieving them. Writing down goals helps to raise awareness of what you want to achieve and signals that it is something important to you. The more detailed the description of what you want to achieve, the more the brain will notice opportunities, tools and resources to help you achieve that goal.

10. Journaling Builds Confidence and Self-esteem

By getting to know yourself better, appreciating your strengths and making progress towards your goals and dreams, your self-belief and confidence can grow quite significantly over time. You start to appreciate your great potential more and find more meaning and purpose in your life.
